Indian Railways Clears Rs 220.51 Crore Doubling of Mararikulam–Alappuzha Line

  • Indian Railways sanctioned the project on Monday, June 8, 2026, approving Rs 220.51 crore to double the 10.65 km Mararikulam–Alappuzha section of Southern Railway.
  • Railways estimates the upgrade will allow nine additional passenger trains in each direction every day and support freight flow of about 2.88 million tonnes per year.
  • The doubling is expected to cut train detention at crossing points, improve punctuality and increase line throughput by turning the last single-track stretch into continuous double track.
  • Officials report the work would add roughly Rs 3.08 crore a year in net earnings and show a Financial IRR of 3.99% and an Economic IRR of 22.30%, reflecting stronger wider economic benefits than direct financial returns.
  • The project is part of Mission 3000 MT and the High Density Traffic Network Corridor program and completes the corridor-wide capacity push that began with earlier doubling works between Ernakulam and Kayankulam, improving regional connectivity and freight logistics.
