Indian Navy Takes Delivery of Second Indigenous Shallow-Water ASW Craft ‘Malwan

The delivery advances India’s push for self-reliant naval production with over 80% domestic content.

Overview

  • Malwan’, which was delivered Tuesday, is the second of eight shallow-water anti-submarine craft built by Cochin Shipyard for the Navy.
  • Built to Indian Navy specifications under DNV classification rules, the vessel was designed and constructed in Kochi.
  • The 80-metre, 1,100-tonne craft uses waterjet propulsion for tight maneuvering in coastal waters where submarines can hide in shallow seabeds.
  • It carries torpedoes, multi-role anti-submarine rockets, and advanced radar and sonar suites to support underwater surveillance, coastal ASW, mine warfare, and low-intensity patrols.
  • Named after the Maharashtra coastal town and reviving an earlier INS Malwan minesweeper, the ship anchors a planned eight-ship series that the Navy says will roll out over the coming years to strengthen coastal defence.
