India Signs Rs 975 Crore Contracts for DRDO-Developed Tank Trawls

The move advances Atmanirbhar Bharat by fielding DRDO-designed mine-clearing gear built in India.

Overview

  • Contracts announced Tuesday between the defence ministry, BEML and Electro Pneumatics cover trawl assemblies for T-72 and T-90 tanks at about Rs 975 crore.
  • BEML received a Rs 590 crore order under a formal agreement signed in New Delhi for systems to be fitted on the Indian Army’s T-72 and T-90 fleets.
  • The trawls were designed with DRDO’s R&DE Pune unit and mount to the front of a tank to detonate or push aside anti-tank mines, opening safe lanes for following vehicles.
  • The procurement falls under Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured), which steers work to domestic suppliers and reduces dependence on imports.
  • The ministry expects MSME participation and new jobs through component manufacturing, while the Army gains stronger minefield-breaching capability that improves mobility and survivability.
