India Sends INS Sunayna to Sea With 16-Nation Crew for IOS SAGAR Deployment

The deployment showcases India’s role as a partner for Indian Ocean security.

Overview

  • INS Sunayna, which sailed from Mumbai on Thursday, begins a seven-week IOS SAGAR sea phase with Indian and 16 foreign sailors onboard.
  • The mission runs through May 20 with planned stops at Colombo, Phuket, Jakarta, Singapore, Chittagong, Yangon, and Male before ending at Kochi.
  • Training focuses on seamanship, navigation, communications, Visit-Board-Search-Seizure boarding drills, firefighting, and damage control to build shared procedures.
  • A two-week harbour program in Kochi from March 16–29 used simulators for realistic scenarios and set common tactics for the crew.
  • Officials tie the effort to India’s MAHASAGAR vision and cite 3,700 Indian Ocean incidents and over $1 billion in drug seizures in 2025 to stress the need for joint action.
