Overview
- India dispatched an initial 2.5-tonne tranche of urgent supplies on May 24 that included protective kits, medical monitoring devices, medicines and nutritional supplements for Uganda.
- The main development is the second 43-tonne consignment that reached Kampala on June 2 and was scheduled for formal handover to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention for mobilisation to affected areas.
- The larger shipment contains protective gear, diagnostic and monitoring equipment, sample transport kits, infection-prevention supplies, medicines and nutritional supplements to support testing, patient care and infection control.
- New Delhi says it mobilised the second tranche after Africa CDC provided a detailed list of operational needs, and Indian diplomatic missions in Addis Ababa and Kampala are coordinating distribution while New Delhi stands ready to send further support.
- The aid comes after the World Health Organization declared the regional Ebola situation a Public Health Emergency of International Concern and is intended to strengthen surveillance, diagnosis and treatment capacity in eastern DRC and neighbouring areas.
