India Says Cooking Gas Supply Stable as Imports Fall, Four-Year Recovery Warning Disputed

Officials say household deliveries remain normal despite lower imports.

Overview

  • Petroleum ministry officials reiterated that 100% supply for household LPG, piped gas and CNG is being met, and they called reports of a four-year recovery timeline misleading.
  • In trade data cited by shippers, April LPG imports are roughly half of February levels, with the United States now the largest supplier and an Indian LPG carrier docking at Kandla after transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Booking pressure has eased back to typical levels, with daily refill requests near 50–55 lakh and deliveries holding close to 50 lakh a day, and no dry-outs reported at distributors.
  • Authorities expanded enforcement and transparency, conducting over 1.28 lakh inspections and seizing more than 59,000 cylinders as online bookings rose to about 98% and delivery verification reached about 92%.
  • Prices have risen since mid-March, with domestic cylinders up about ₹60 and commercial rates higher by roughly ₹115, while commercial supply has been restored to about 70% as the government diversifies cargoes and boosts refinery output.
