India Reports Sharp 2024–25 Drop in Select Imports From China

A ministerial reply to the Rajya Sabha credits supply-chain diversification for the shift.

Overview

  • Fertiliser imports from China fell 61.4 percent in 2024–25, the steepest decline among tracked categories.
  • Residual chemicals and allied products dropped 19.7 percent, iron and steel slid 10.3 percent, and man-made yarn decreased 9.5 percent year over year.
  • The figures were disclosed on 6 February in a written reply by Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada.
  • Over the past decade, mobile phone imports fell from Rs 48,609 crore (2014–15) to Rs 3,710 crore (2024–25) as exports rose from Rs 1,566 crore to over Rs 2,05,017 crore.
  • The government urges businesses to diversify suppliers and says it regularly monitors import surges and takes action when required, even as overall trade with China remains substantial.
