India Rejects U.S. Rice ‘Dumping’ Claim as Trump Threatens New Tariffs

Officials say U.S.-bound shipments are mostly premium basmati, with no anti-dumping case opened.

Overview

  • Trade Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said there is no prima facie case of dumping and that U.S. authorities have not begun an anti-dumping investigation.
  • Official data show India exported 20.2 million metric tonnes of rice in 2024–25, including 335,554 tonnes to the U.S., of which 274,213 tonnes were higher-priced basmati.
  • President Trump last week accused India of undercutting U.S. producers and warned of possible extra duties on Indian rice imports.
  • In August, the administration doubled tariffs on a range of Indian goods to as much as 50%, escalating broader trade tensions between the two countries.
  • A delegation led by Agrawal met U.S. Deputy Trade Representative Rick Switzer in New Delhi for talks on a proposed trade pact as the White House also rolled out a $12 billion aid package for farmers who blamed imports for weak crop prices.
