Overview
- Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary told Parliament on Tuesday that the IMF’s April 2026 World Economic Outlook put India’s 2025–26 nominal GDP at $3.92 trillion, ranking it sixth globally.
- The IMF placement contrasts with the government’s December 30, 2025 year-end review, which had reported India as the fourth-largest economy at about $4.18 trillion.
- The government said the IMF uses nominal GDP converted at current US dollar exchange rates and that rankings can shift because of currency moves, price changes, revisions to national accounts and other countries’ performance.
- To boost growth potential the government highlighted focused measures such as Production-Linked Incentive schemes for manufacturing, PM Gati Shakti and the National Logistics Policy for infrastructure, liberalised FDI rules, and tax reforms to improve investment climate.
- Officials also cited stronger financial-sector indicators, reporting GNPA of Rs 2,45,634 crore and a GNPA ratio of 1.93% for public sector banks as of March 31, 2026, a sharp fall in reported bank fraud cases, Rs 86,917.08 crore in unclaimed DEA Fund deposits as of June 30, 2026, and substantial foreign portfolio investor activity through early August 2026.
