- Indian officials and multiple outlets reported Sunday that New Delhi has proposed senior BJP leader Dinesh Trivedi as high commissioner to Bangladesh and sent an agrément for Dhaka’s consent.
- Pranay Verma, the current envoy in Dhaka, was named on April 10 by India’s foreign ministry to move to Brussels as ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.
- Trivedi is a former railway minister and ex–minister of state for health, a veteran from West Bengal who left the Trinamool Congress in 2021 to join the BJP, in what would be a rare political appointment to a key neighboring post.
- The choice comes as both sides try to steady relations that soured after the August 2024 upheaval in Dhaka, with the new BNP government taking office in February 2026 and recent talks in New Delhi focused on restoring trade, visas, and practical cooperation.
- Agrément is the host country’s formal consent to an ambassador’s posting, so India is expected to issue a final notification once Bangladesh approves.
