India Orders IndiGo to Cut Flights by 10% as Regulator Tightens Oversight

The cut follows mass cancellations linked to mismanaged crew rosters under stricter pilot rest rules.

Overview

  • The Civil Aviation Ministry mandated a 10% reduction in IndiGo’s winter operations after a DGCA order earlier required a 5% schedule cut, with the carrier expected to keep serving all destinations.
  • DGCA formed an eight-member oversight team, placed officials at IndiGo’s headquarters, and summoned CEO Pieter Elbers to present a comprehensive report and data on Thursday.
  • Show-cause notices have been issued to senior leadership as an enforcement probe proceeds, with temporary fare caps and passenger-assistance measures directed across the network.
  • More than 4,600 flights have been cancelled since early December, over 400 were scrapped on Tuesday, and fresh cancellations were reported on Wednesday including multiple Bengaluru services.
  • IndiGo says operations are stabilising under an adjusted network, flights to all 138 stations have resumed, refunds for travel up to 6 December are complete, and most delayed baggage has been returned.
