India Moves to Mandate Vehicle-to-Vehicle Alerts as Rollout Begins on New Cars

A joint MoRTH–DoT task force is finalising standards following the telecom department’s in‑principle nod for 30 MHz dedicated spectrum.

Overview

  • Officials say installation will start on new vehicles first with retrofitting of older vehicles to follow once standards are notified.
  • DoT has agreed in principle to set aside 30 MHz in the 5.875–5.905 GHz band for V2V use under the National Frequency Allocation Plan.
  • The on‑board unit is estimated to cost Rs 5,000–7,000 per vehicle and enables direct car‑to‑car alerts without relying on mobile networks.
  • The system will share real‑time data such as speed, location, acceleration and braking to warn of hazards, complementing ADAS by extending awareness beyond sensor range.
  • Timelines differ across statements, with some officials targeting full deployment this year and others indicating phased implementation through end‑2026; related road‑safety steps include 100 ‘Zero Fatality Districts’, a nationwide cashless treatment scheme and proposed Motor Vehicles Act amendments.
