India Launches Hydrogen Highways With Two-Year Truck Trials

A government-backed pilot will build out the hydrogen value chain as a step toward the 2030 green hydrogen target.

Overview

  • Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced Rs 500 crore for five consortiums to run large-scale hydrogen truck trials on ten routes.
  • Thirty-seven vehicles will operate over two years with support from nine hydrogen refuelling stations positioned along key freight and port corridors.
  • Industry partners include Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Volvo, BPCL, IOCL, NTPC and Reliance, signaling a full ecosystem push beyond vehicles.
  • Routes span major hubs such as Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Visakhapatnam, Thiruvananthapuram, Jamnagar and Jamshedpur.
  • The programme aligns with the goal of producing 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, with projections for jobs, investment and import savings.
