India Launches First River Lighthouses on the Brahmaputra

The move responds to a 53% jump in Brahmaputra freight last fiscal.

Overview

  • Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid foundation stones in Guwahati for lighthouses at Bogibeel, Pandu, Silghat and Biswanath Ghat along National Waterway-2.
  • The Rs 84 crore plan specifies 20-metre, fully solar structures with a 14-nautical-mile geographic range and an 8 to 10-nautical-mile luminous range.
  • Designed to enable 24x7 safe navigation, the sites will also host weather sensors to support growing freight, passenger and tourism traffic.
  • DGLL is executing the project under an April 2025 MoU with IWAI after Right of Use transfers in June 2025, extending coastal-grade aids to an inland corridor.
  • Geotechnical and topographic surveys and detailed design come next, with each lighthouse due within 24 months of contract award and each site planned with museums, amphitheatres, cafeterias and landscaped public spaces.
