Overview
- On Tuesday, Higher Education Secretary and UGC chair Vineet Joshi formally handed Letters of Approval to the University of Bristol, the University of York and the University of New South Wales to establish campuses in Mumbai (Bristol, York) and Bengaluru (UNSW).
- With these approvals the UGC has issued five formal Letters of Approval to foreign institutions, joining earlier approvals to the University of Southampton and the University of Liverpool and existing operations at GIFT City by other universities.
- All three universities are cleared to begin student intakes for the 2026 academic cycle, with Bristol planning a temporary Powai site and up to 250 students in its first year and UNSW scheduling classes to start in August 2026 at Embassy Manyata Business Park in Bengaluru.
- The UGC framework vets institutions on academic credibility, financial stability and programme design while allowing academic autonomy, and the approved campuses will prioritise industry‑aligned fields such as AI, cyber security, data science, finance, creative and immersive arts, renewable energy, health and education technology.
- Officials and university leaders say the approvals could expand access to internationally benchmarked programmes inside India, deepen research and industry partnerships that create internships and jobs, and seed a pipeline of further foreign campuses following the UGC’s issued Letters of Intent.
