India Extends Free Rail Travel to Sena, Nau Sena and Vayu Sena Gallantry Awardees

The decision broadens rail perks for decorated troops to a tier just below the Shaurya Chakra.

Overview

  • The government approved lifelong complimentary travel on Indian Railways for recipients of the Sena Medal, Nau Sena Medal and Vayu Sena Medal when the honour was for gallantry.
  • Eligible awardees can ride in First Class, Second AC and AC Chair Car, and they may take one companion at no cost.
  • Family coverage includes a spouse who remains unmarried after the awardee’s death and the parents of an unmarried soldier who received the medal posthumously.
  • The concession is limited to gallantry awards and excludes the same medals given for distinguished service, expanding a policy that previously covered only Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra and Shaurya Chakra winners and their wartime equivalents.
  • Implementation rules will be issued after the Adjutant General’s branch and the Controller General of Defence Accounts finalize procedures, while a new Railways–Army framework promotes veteran hiring through job reservations and short-term contracts such as Pointsmen roles.
