India Confirms 2026 Venice Biennale Pavilion Curated by Amin Jaffer

The project examines home, distance and material memory with support from the Ministry of Culture, NMACC and Serendipity Arts.

Overview

  • India will present Geographies of Distance: Remembering Home in the Arsenale from 9 May to 22 November 2026, marking its first national pavilion since 2019.
  • The pavilion features five artists: Alwar Balasubramaniam (Bala), Sumakshi Singh, Ranjani Shettar, Asim Waqif and Skarma Sonam Tashi.
  • Curator Amin Jaffer frames the exhibition around home as a portable condition shaped by change or distance, with works drawing on organic and traditional materials.
  • The initiative is backed by the Ministry of Culture with the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre and Serendipity Arts Foundation, with plans for related performance and conversation programs.
  • Jaffer, a former V&A senior curator and director of the Al Thani Collection, leads India’s return after a seven-year gap, following sporadic national pavilions in 2011 and 2019 and heightened visibility for Indian artists in 2024.
