India Conducts First Helicopter Salvo Launch of Indigenous NASM-SR

Telemetry-confirmed waterline hits signal a maturing home-grown anti-ship option for Navy helicopters.

Overview

  • DRDO and the Indian Navy fired two NASM-SR missiles in quick succession from the same helicopter on Wednesday off Odisha, with range data from ITR Chandipur confirming all test goals.
  • The trial proved a waterline strike profile, which aims at a ship’s hull near the water level to trigger flooding and disable vital systems.
  • NASM-SR is India’s first indigenous helicopter-launched anti-ship missile, offering low-altitude sea-skimming flight and a range of about 55 km.
  • The system uses Indian-built components including an imaging seeker, a fibre‑optic gyroscope inertial navigator, a radio altimeter, a two-way data link for updates, and jet‑vane control.
  • Production under the Development‑cum‑Production Partner model, led by Adani Defence with MSME suppliers, follows earlier tests in 2022 and February 2025 that validated lock‑on‑after‑launch and man‑in‑loop control.
