India Commissions ICGS Samudra Pratap, First Indigenous Pollution-Control Ship

Built by Goa Shipyard, the 4,170-ton vessel expands the Coast Guard’s dedicated oil-spill response capability.

Overview

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commissioned the ship on January 5 in Goa, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the induction advances self-reliance and sustainability.
  • The vessel is the largest in the Coast Guard fleet with over 60% indigenous content, offering 6,000 nautical miles of endurance and speeds exceeding 22 knots.
  • Specialized equipment includes side-sweeping arms, high-capacity skimmers, floating booms, portable barges, a pollution control laboratory, and Fi‑Fi Class 1 firefighting.
  • It will operate from Kochi under Coast Guard Region (West) and is the first of two pollution-control vessels planned by Goa Shipyard.
  • In a first for an ICG frontline ship, two women officers are posted onboard, and multi-role systems enable patrol, law enforcement, and helicopter operations.
