India Clears ₹40,150 Crore for Two Arunachal Hydropower Projects

The move underscores a strategy to tap Northeast hydropower to steady the grid through new roads, bridges, transmission lines.

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, which approved the investments Wednesday, cleared funding of ₹26,069.50 crore for the Kamala project and ₹14,105.83 crore for the Kalai‑II project.
  • Kalai‑II will install 1,200 MW on the Lohit river in Anjaw through a THDCArunachal JV, target completion in 78 months, expected output of about 4,853 million units a year.
  • Kamala will add 1,720 MW across Kamle, Kra Daadi, Kurung Kumey via an NHPCArunachal JV, target completion in 96 months, expected generation of about 6,870 million units a year.
  • New central support includes ₹599.88 crore for Kalai‑II enabling works and ₹750 crore toward the state’s equity, while Kamala receives ₹4,743.98 crore for flood moderation, ₹1,340 crore for enabling works, plus ₹750 crore for equity.
  • Arunachal will get 12% free power and 1% for a Local Area Development Fund, with project funds to build local roads and bridges—about 196 km in Kamala areas and 29 km in Anjaw—along with hospitals, schools, marketplaces, jobs and compensation; the approvals also extend a broader Northeast hydro buildout that includes Subansiri Lower, Dibang and the proposed Etalin.
