Index Finds 98% of UK Adults Living With Parents Priced Out of First Homes

New Skipton/Oxford Economics data says running costs rather than deposits now block most would-be first-time buyers living at home.

Overview

  • About 4.9 million adults live with their parents, and fewer than one in ten in any region could afford the typical local first-time buyer home on a single income.
  • Even removing the deposit hurdle, 97% would still face unsustainable housing costs that exceed roughly 45% of monthly income.
  • Affordability is worst in London and much of the South where under 1.5% could buy, with Cardiff at 2.3% and Aberdeen a rare outlier at 30.4%.
  • Polling of 2,000 adults living with parents reports half are frustrated with their situation, 36% feel a loss of independence, and most say moving out remains a distant prospect.
  • Skipton urges joined-up action including property tax reform, more housebuilding, and support for downsizing that could release an average £72,400, as recent NHBC data show new-home registrations sliding year on year.
