IMSS Reports Record February Rebound in Formal Jobs as Platform Rules Boost Totals

The inclusion of newly counted app‑based workers under an IMSS reform is reshaping headline labor metrics.

Overview

  • Official data show 182,778 formal jobs added in February, lifting IMSS‑registered employment to 22,691,750 and marking the highest February level on record.
  • Including 1.25 million platform beneficiaries—163,896 of whom met the income threshold to be counted—shifts the Jan–Feb tally to 174,674 versus 217,299 if platforms are excluded, a change some analysts say overstates underlying hiring.
  • The average salary base rose to about 664.1 pesos per day, a nominal annual increase of 7.2% and the highest reading for any month on record.
  • Registered employers fell to 1,021,996, down 1,442 from January and 2.5% year over year, with the IMSS citing tighter controls on opening individual employer accounts.
  • Sector gains were led by communications and transport, commerce and electricity, with the largest bimonthly job additions concentrated in Mexico City, Nuevo León and Sonora.
