IMD Warns of Widespread Rain, Hail and Gusty Winds as Stronger Western Disturbance Nears

Forecasters warn a stronger western disturbance could unleash hail with damaging winds over a broad swath of India.

Overview

  • IMD says two quick western disturbances will drive storms across large regions, with activity peaking Wednesday and Thursday (April 7–8) before easing.
  • Forecasts point to rain, lightning and hail in north, central, east and parts of the south, with thundersqualls up to 70 kmph and a 110-knot westerly jet aloft likely to energize storms.
  • Delhi looks partly cloudy and warmer on Monday, then likely sees rain, lightning and gusts up to 30–50 kmph on April 7–8 with cooler daytime highs and air quality in the moderate band.
  • Recent storms in Madhya Pradesh delivered rare 2.5 cm hail, injured people in Gwalior and killed at least six in Bhind, while farmers reported heavy losses to wheat and gram.
  • Authorities issued yellow and orange alerts in several states and urged early harvest and crop protection, warning of fast-changing conditions that could disrupt daily life.
