IMD Flags Weeklong Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain Across India

Official alerts signal a volatile pre‑monsoon week with flooding rains in some regions plus dangerous heat elsewhere.

Overview

  • The IMD, which issued a May 2–8 outlook Saturday, warns of widespread thunderstorms, heavy rain and gusty winds up to 70 kmph across northwest, northeast, east, central and southern states, with hot, humid pockets in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
  • Delhi is under a yellow alert for light rain, lightning and gusty winds on Sunday and Monday after Saturday evening downpours cooled the city.
  • Tamil Nadu faces a seven-day heavy rain alert from the Chennai weather office, with rainfall likely to intensify between May 5 and May 8 in several districts.
  • Squally winds of 45–55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph, are forecast over the Bay of Bengal and adjoining coasts, and fishermen are advised to stay ashore.
  • Odisha’s recent storms lowered temperatures but damaged crops and mud houses and uprooted trees, with officials saying compensation will follow damage assessments.
