ICE Says 19-Year-Old Dies by Presumed Suicide at Florida Detention Center

The death is under investigation as scrutiny grows over a jail previously closed for inadequate care before reopening in 2025.

Overview

  • Royer Perez-Jimenez was found unresponsive at 2:34 a.m. on March 16 at Glades County Detention Center and was pronounced dead at 2:51 a.m., ICE said.
  • ICE classified the case as a presumed suicide, said the official cause remains under review, and notified DHS oversight offices, the Mexican consulate, and next of kin.
  • Intake records show he arrived on Feb. 26, was evaluated by medical staff, denied behavioral-health issues, and answered no to all suicide-screening questions.
  • The Glades facility was shut in 2022 over detainee-care concerns and reopened in April 2025, drawing renewed questions about conditions and oversight.
  • At 19, he is reported as the youngest detainee to die during President Trump’s current term, with at least 13 deaths in ICE custody reported so far this year.
