ICE Lodges Detainer for Man Indicted in Ohio Crash That Killed Pregnant Teen

DHS says the detainer is meant to hold the suspect for possible removal after his criminal case is resolved.

Overview

  • The Ohio crash occurred on February 16 when a Range Rover driven by Tarsem Singh fled from police, exceeded posted speeds, crossed the center line and struck a Jeep, ejecting 17-year-old passenger Ashlee Holmes and killing her and her unborn child.
  • A Darke County grand jury returned indictments on March 23 charging Singh with counts that include involuntary manslaughter, reckless homicide and aggravated vehicular homicide.
  • Singh is in custody on a $1 million bond and a jury trial is set for August 17–21, 2026.
  • Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged an arrest detainer and DHS says Singh entered the U.S. illegally in February 2017 while the victim’s mother has publicly urged that he be deported.
  • An ICE detainer does not itself deport someone but seeks to keep a noncitizen in custody for later immigration proceedings, which means deportation would follow a separate administrative process and could hinge on the outcome of the criminal trial while the case fuels broader debate over enforcement.
