ICE Courthouse Arrest Photo Wins World Press Photo of the Year

Jurors said the image serves as evidence of how U.S. immigration enforcement splits families.

Overview

  • World Press Photo, which announced its top prize Thursday, selected veteran photographer Carol Guzy’s “Separated by ICE” from 57,376 entries as Photo of the Year.
  • The photograph shows ICE detaining an Ecuadorian father, Luis, after a New York immigration hearing as his wife, Cocha, and their three children, ages 7, 13, and 15, cling to him in distress.
  • The jury said the scene documents a government policy applied to people who attend immigration hearings in good faith.
  • Finalists included a Gaza aid-truck scene by Saber Nuraldin and a portrait of Indigenous Achi women in Guatemala by Victor J. Blue.
  • The winning work will debut in World Press Photo’s traveling exhibition in Amsterdam on April 24.
