ICC Hands Demerit Points to Lord's and Gaddafi Stadium Over Substandard Pitches

The rulings place demerit points on record that can lead to venue suspensions under ICC rules with the ECB and PCB allotted 14 days to lodge appeals.

Overview

  • The ICC formally rated the Lord’s Test wicket and the Gaddafi Stadium ODI surface “unsatisfactory” and on Tuesday awarded one demerit point to each venue under its Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process.
  • Match referee Andy Pycroft reported that Lord’s produced excessive seam movement, very low deliveries and variable bounce that created an over‑balance in favour of bowlers.
  • Match referee Graeme La Brooy found Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium pitch to be slow, low and offering early spin that made scoring unusually difficult for a 50‑over game.
  • The Marylebone Cricket Club apologised and pledged quick remedial work at Lord’s while the ICC has forwarded the reports to the England and Wales Cricket Board and the Pakistan Cricket Board, each with 14 days to appeal.
  • Under ICC rules a single 'unsatisfactory' rating carries one demerit point that stays on a rolling five‑year record and could contribute to a 12‑month suspension if a ground accumulates six points, a prospect that has drawn criticism from players and commentators about the effect on Test and ODI integrity.
