ICC Docks England 12 WTC Points for Slow Over-Rate After Oval Test Loss

Match referee Andy Pycroft applied fines and a points deduction under ICC rules, a move that cuts England’s points percentage and weakens their route to the 2027 World Test Championship final.

Overview

  • The ICC announced on Monday that England were found 12 overs short in the second Test at The Oval and have been docked 12 World Test Championship points.
  • Players were fined under Article 2.22 of the Code of Conduct at a rate of 5% of match fees per over short up to a 50% cap while Article 16.11.2 of the WTC conditions mandated the one-point-per-over deduction.
  • Match referee Andy Pycroft imposed the sanctions after on-field and TV umpires filed the charge and stand-in captain Joe Root pleaded guilty and accepted the proposed penalties so no formal hearing was held.
  • The penalty leaves England on 38 WTC points with their points percentage reduced from 34.72 to 26.38, dropping them to seventh in the standings and making top-two qualification much harder.
  • Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were cleared by the ECB and recalled for the series decider at Trent Bridge starting June 25, but England must now win consistently and avoid further breaches to keep any realistic chance of reaching the 2027 final.
