IBM Commits 750 Jobs for Chicago Quantum Campus Under State Tax-Credit Deal

The pledge signals Illinois is using job-tied incentives to anchor a high-tech hub on the long-vacant South Works site.

Overview

  • A job-creation agreement announced Wednesday between IBM and Illinois requires 750 full-time hires by 2030 in exchange for about $19 million in state income tax credits.
  • State records list at least 250 app developers, 150 software developers and 80 data analysts among the roles, with hiring fed by a new City Colleges apprenticeship that will train 500 people and place 180 at IBM.
  • FutureNow Chicago will operate inside Quantum Works, a workforce center slated to open in 2028 at the 440-acre former U.S. Steel South Works site, and other tenants, including PsiQuantum, have pledged 150 jobs.
  • IBM says its Quantum System Two computer, set to power the National Quantum Algorithm Center on the campus, remains on track to launch later this year.
  • Local groups are pressing for a binding community benefits deal and some residents voice fears about cleanup and displacement, while others welcome the chance for steady work close to home.
