Overview
- The IAEA reported on Sept. 1 that it has clarified and resolved outstanding safeguards questions about Syria’s undeclared nuclear activities from the Assad era.
- Inspectors found cooling infrastructure at the Deir Ezzor site that is consistent with a gas-cooled, graphite-moderated reactor and monitored ongoing excavation at the location.
- The agency verified roughly 73 tonnes of natural uranium metal, including about 55 tonnes in fuel rods, and said all of the material is now under IAEA containment and surveillance.
- The IAEA concluded that former Syrian authorities failed to report nuclear material, facilities and activities as required under their NPT safeguards agreement, and praised recent Syrian cooperation and provision of design and accounting information.
- The Board of Governors will review the agency’s findings as the IAEA continues on-site monitoring, and the report notes Iran’s verification remains stalled because inspectors lack access to confirm that country’s uranium stocks.
