IAEA Confirms Israeli Strike Disabled Iran’s Khondab Heavy Water Plant

The UN watchdog reported no off-site radiation risk from the strike.

Overview

  • The International Atomic Energy Agency said Sunday its satellite review shows the Khondab heavy water plant near Arak sustained severe damage and is no longer operational.
  • Israel said Friday its air force hit the site as part of its Rising Lion campaign and also targeted a uranium extraction facility in Yazd.
  • The agency reported the installation contained no declared nuclear material and found no off-site radioactive release.
  • Heavy water is used to cool certain reactors that can produce plutonium as a byproduct, and Iran disabled the Arak reactor core under the 2015 nuclear deal to reduce that risk.
  • Inspectors continue to track safety at other locations in Iran, including reported activity near the Bushehr nuclear plant and strikes on steel factories that use sealed radioactive sources but remain in normal operation.
