Overview
- Two lanes in each direction were reopened to traffic overnight, a milestone announced by state officials on Wednesday that came three days ahead of the scheduled Aug. 1 reopening.
- The move follows a planned two-month full closure that let crews replace the three most deteriorated overpasses on the five-mile Central Corridor between I-264 and Jefferson Street.
- Crews set about 70 steel beams and more than 200 precast deck panels during the closure to rebuild the Kentucky/Brook, Hill Street/CSX/Burnett and Bradley Avenue bridges, which were built in the late 1950s and rated in poor condition.
- Motorists should expect reduced speed limits, lane shifts, ramp restrictions and signed detours via I-264 because the corridor remains an active construction zone with additional work and surface-street closures scheduled into late 2026 and early 2027.
- The reopening is part of the $150 million Central Corridor Project to replace or rehabilitate nine I-65 bridges and is expected to cut at least a year from staged work, with the three principal bridge replacements due by March 2027 and other corridor work to follow.
