I-225 Shooting Suspect Arrested in Aurora, Now in ICE Custody After Alleged Flight Plan

License-plate reader hits led detectives to the car, with formal charges to be determined by the 18th Judicial District Attorney.

Overview

  • Police say the driver shot on southbound I-225 near East 6th Avenue remains hospitalized on life support after crashing into a barrier.
  • Aurora officers arrested 38-year-old Celin Villeda Orellana during a traffic stop near 11th Avenue and Havana Street and recommended multiple felony counts including attempted first-degree murder.
  • After investigators alleged he was preparing to flee the country, Orellana, a Honduran national, was transferred to ICE custody in consultation with Homeland Security Investigations for possible federal action.
  • Detectives used Flock Safety license-plate readers to trace a suspect vehicle and said footage showed the suspect following the victim before the shooting, with a link between the men through a woman whom police relocated for safety.
  • At the time of the arrest, police reported finding a gun and a shell casing in the vehicle, and noted Orellana had been deported in 2007, 2018 and 2020, with the latest removal following an arrest on child sexual assault-related charges.
