HyundaiSK On Battery Plant in Georgia Moves Into Early Mass Production

Supplying U.S.-built cells to Hyundai’s Metaplant, the start of production advances the companies’ plan to onshore EV manufacturing and test whether local supply can scale.

Overview

  • The Bartow County facility entered early mass production in June and began delivering battery cells to Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, according to reports published July 15.
  • The joint venture cost about $5 billion to build, sits on roughly 3.3 million square feet, and is expected to employ about 3,500 workers when fully staffed.
  • HSBMA aims to ramp toward an annual capacity of about 35 gigawatt-hours, a quantity Hyundai says would power roughly 300,000 electric vehicles each year.
  • Cells made at the plant will be assembled into battery packs by Hyundai Mobis for Hyundai, Kia and Genesis EVs built in the United States.
  • The timing of a full scale-up is uncertain because U.S. EV sales have softened since federal tax-credit changes, and nearby Georgia battery projects have faced construction and labor disruptions that could affect regional supply chains.
