Hyundai Deploys Eight XCIENT Hydrogen Trucks to Uruguay’s Kahirós Project

A Uruguayan consortium is pairing a 4.8 MW solar park with electrolysis to fuel the zero‑emission timber fleet under a $40 million financing package.

Overview

  • Hyundai confirmed delivery of eight XCIENT fuel‑cell trucks for the Kahirós initiative, which Hyundai and project materials describe as South America’s first hydrogen truck fleet.
  • Full commercial operations are scheduled for the second half of 2026, with six trucks in daily service and two held in reserve targeting about one million kilometres per year.
  • Project infrastructure includes a completed 4.8 MW solar installation and a planned electrolysis and refuelling buildout expected to produce roughly 77 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
  • The 37.2‑ton XCIENT trucks feature a 180 kW fuel‑cell system, a 350 kW motor, storage for up to 68 kg of hydrogen across ten tanks, and an estimated range of up to 720 km.
  • The Kahirós consortium brings together Ventus, Fraylog and Fidocar with $40 million from Banco Santander and support from the IFC and the UN Renewable Energy Innovation Fund.
