Hypertension Rates Climb in Peru, Mexico and Argentina as Warnings Intensify

Experts warn many cases go undiagnosed, driving calls for routine blood-pressure checks.

Overview

  • Health agencies and clinicians in the three countries issued fresh alerts ahead of World Hypertension Day on May 17, with Peru’s EsSalud running a public screening drive.
  • In Jalisco, official figures recorded 45,406 diagnosed cases in 2022, and prevalence reached 41.5% among people 50 and older in 2024.
  • Cardiologists in Guadalajara said about half of people with high blood pressure do not know it, and they reported faulty readings from poor equipment that can miss by up to 20 mmHg.
  • In Argentina, national RENATA studies estimate adult prevalence at about 36.3%, or roughly four in ten people.
  • Peru reports about 22% living with hypertension, and EsSalud logged around 260,000 new clinic visits in 2025, prompting advice to cut salt to near five grams a day and to exercise daily.
