Hyderabad Police Crack Down on Fake, Tampered Number Plates

Officials say fraudulent plates are used to hide vehicle identity, prompting sustained seizures and prosecutions across the city.

Overview

  • This week the Hyderabad Traffic Police registered five criminal cases and seized multiple vehicles after targeted checks at Jubilee Hills, Malakpet, Begum Bazaar, Abids and Kacheguda police stations.
  • Officers say the drive targets cars with fake, tampered or unauthorised registration plates that can be used to evade fines or hide a vehicle’s identity.
  • Police warned that only government-approved High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) are legally valid and that altered plates, missing digits and temporary stickers are illegal.
  • The enforcement includes immediate seizure of vehicles found with manipulated plates and criminal prosecution for offenders, and authorities said the operation will continue citywide.
  • The campaign may make it harder for drivers to avoid penalties and could increase demand for proper HSRP installations while clarifying how number-plate rules are enforced in Hyderabad.
