Hyderabad Deploys Teams to Enforce Mandatory Rainwater Harvesting

The water board has launched a 90-day outreach effort to shore up groundwater as tanker demand surges.

Overview

  • Special teams will inspect properties over the next three months and issue notices to 16,000 owners who lack required harvesting pits.
  • A 90-day public outreach campaign is underway to promote installation and maintenance of rainwater harvesting systems.
  • The mandate obliges households on plots above 200 square yards to install harvesting pits and makes systems compulsory on premises exceeding 300 square yards.
  • In partnership with NGOs, the board has already built 12,000 systems and plans to construct another 16,000 across the city.
  • Following a deficient monsoon, groundwater levels have dropped and tanker bookings from July 1–14 rose from 63,724 last year to 86,520 this year.
