Hurricane Simon Weakens to Category 2 Offshore Western Mexico

Forecasters warn Simon's slow, offshore track could cause life‑threatening rain, storm surge, mudslides or a landfall later this week.

Overview

  • Simon weakened to a Category 2 storm but remained just offshore of Mexico's west‑central Pacific coast on Monday, producing hurricane‑force gusts, heavy rain and very large swells, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
  • Heavy downpours flooded streets and homes in Manzanillo and other coastal towns, and authorities confirmed at least one death in Guerrero after a retaining wall collapsed.
  • Federal and state agencies suspended nonessential activities, opened dozens of temporary shelters, carried out precautionary evacuations and deployed more than 1,500 emergency personnel to affected states.
  • Air travel and ports were disrupted with Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo airports temporarily closed, and security forces helped move people to higher ground as rivers and low‑lying areas rose.
  • The system is part of an unusually active eastern Pacific season driven by El Niño and warm waters, which have fueled recent rapid intensification and raise the risk of extreme rainfall, mudslides and wider strain on local response capacity.
