Hurricane Lowell Moves Toward Western Hawaii as Hurricane Warning Covers Kauaʻi County

Heavy rain, large surf and a possible up-to-3-foot storm surge threaten flash floods, mudslides and coastal flooding as the storm passes near the western islands

Hurricane Lowell's rain and other effects are arriving along the Hawaii Islands on Monday, Sept. 7, long before the hurricane's center is forecast to pass within 100 miles of west of the island of Niihau in Kauai County, the National Hurricane Center said.

  • The National Hurricane Center says Lowell is a Category 3 hurricane with about 115 mph winds and a Hurricane Warning for Kauaʻi County and parts of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument.
  • Forecasters project the storm’s center will pass just west of the main islands late Monday into early Tuesday, with gradual weakening expected but persistent hazardous conditions.
  • Lowell is forecast to drop several inches to more than a foot of rain in places, raising the risk of significant flash flooding and mudslides on Kauaʻi and steep terrain on the Big Island.
  • South- and west-facing shores face very large surf, life-threatening rip currents and a storm surge up to about 3 feet that could produce coastal flooding and damage.
  • State officials declared a state of emergency and prepositioned National Guard and Coast Guard resources to support search, rescue and recovery if impacts intensify, while uncertainty in track and intensity keeps preparations in effect.
