Hurricane Center Starts Daily Outlooks for 2026 Season With No Storms Flagged

Forecasters expect a slightly below-average Atlantic season as a developing El Niño raises wind shear.

Overview

  • The National Hurricane Center, which resumed routine Tropical Weather Outlooks Friday, reported no tropical cyclone formation expected over the next seven days.
  • The outlook will post four times each day at 2 a.m., 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. to track disturbances across the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf.
  • New for 2026, outlook maps add a gray X for very low chances and the forecast cone now shows inland watches and warnings to highlight wind risks away from the coast.
  • Early projections from Colorado State University call for about 13 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 2 major hurricanes, with an emerging El Niño likely to suppress Atlantic development by increasing upper-level wind shear.
  • NOAA plans to release its official seasonal forecast on May 21, and the official season runs June 1 through Nov. 30 with the first storm set to be named Arthur.
