Overview
- Park rangers responded to a report and recovered human remains near Crystal Rapid on Monday, Sept. 14, then transferred the remains to the Coconino County Medical Examiner in Flagstaff for identification.
- Officials have not released an identity and have not confirmed a link to the hiker Timothy (Tim) Smith who was reported missing after the Aug. 29 flooding.
- The discovery follows deadly flash floods on Aug. 29 that killed two men and prompted large rescue and search operations inside Bright Angel Canyon and at Phantom Ranch.
- Investigators note that heavy runoff and debris flows from the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire burn scar boosted downstream transport, which can move remains and wreckage roughly 10 miles from Phantom Ranch to Crystal Rapid and complicate forensic work.
- Park staff say searches and forensic examinations are ongoing and that the finding could affect recovery efforts, victim identification and further assessments of trail, bridge and pipeline damage in the canyon.
