Hubbard County Man Charged Over Threats to Senator and State Capitol

The arrest comes as Capitol security reports a steep increase in threats to Minnesota lawmakers.

Overview

  • Deputies arrested John Tobias at a Park Rapids-area property after a State Patrol investigator flagged an online threat and a search warrant was executed.
  • Charging documents say Tobias tagged Sen. Glenn Gruenhagen in an expletive-laden Facebook post and later told the Attorney General’s Office he would “execute” people at the Capitol if he did not recoup money he says he lost during the COVID shutdown.
  • Investigators seized nine firearms, including an AR-15 and several handguns, along with 45 boxes of ammunition.
  • Tobias was arraigned on two felony counts of making terroristic threats and is scheduled to return to court on March 2.
  • In an interview, Tobias admitted making the threats, claimed he sought attention rather than to kill, and records show investigators had previously spoken with him about similar January threats.
