Overview
- The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism formalized the Level 4 status on January 29, 2026 through Vice Ministerial Resolution No. 002-2026-MINCETUR-VMT.
- The application was submitted by Áncash’s regional tourism office (Dircetur) in coordination with the protected area authority SERNANP.
- The highest tier places Huascarán among Peru’s most internationally marketable destinations and is expected to bolster nature tourism and local development in Áncash.
- The park safeguards the core of the Cordillera Blanca, with more than 600 glaciers, about 300 glacial lakes, and 27 peaks over 6,000 meters, including Peru’s highest mountain.
- Huascarán already holds UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (1977) and World Heritage (1985) status, and has been recognized by 100 Top Green Destinations and sustainability campaigns such as “Leave footprints, not waste.”
