Howler Monkey Rescued From La Matanza Home, Transferred to Buenos Aires Ecopark

A neighbor's report prompted a raid enforced under Argentina's wildlife law.

Overview

  • National gendarmes from the Escuadrón de Seguridad Ciudadana Sur-Oeste “Puerta de Hierro” carried out the operation on March 19 in the Puerta de Hierro neighborhood of La Matanza.
  • Two women at the residence acknowledged possessing the animal, which officers found caged inside the home.
  • The primate was identified as a protected brown-coated black howler monkey (Alouatta caraya), a species heavily targeted by illegal wildlife trafficking in Argentina.
  • Federal Court No. 1 of Morón took charge of the case and directed the participation of the Policía Federal’s Environmental Control Brigade.
  • The animal is now under custody and evaluation at the Ecoparque de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires as authorities process the case under Law 22.421 on wildlife conservation.
