How India Gives: Household Donations Reach Rs 54,000 Crore, Largely Informal and Faith-Led

The nationally representative CSIP study finds household generosity far outstrips reported CSR spending.

Overview

  • CSIP estimates everyday household giving at about Rs 54,000 crore a year, exceeding the roughly Rs 28,000 crore mandated under corporate CSR.
  • Donations are concentrated in two channels: about 46% to religious organisations and roughly 42% given directly to destitute individuals, with only around 15% to non-religious groups.
  • In-kind support is the most common mode at about 46–48%, cash accounts for roughly 44%, and around 30% of respondents report volunteering time.
  • Participation is widespread at 68%, with giving more likely among men than women (71% vs 64%), slightly higher in urban than rural households (70% vs 66%), and rising strongly with education.
  • Regional and behavioral patterns include higher participation in northern states, rural donors favoring religious bodies, urban donors giving more to destitutes, and in-person requests (25%) outpacing social media (~15%) as prompts to give.
