Houston ISD Board Votes 9–0 to Close or Consolidate 12 Campuses

The state-appointed board approved the plan after leaders pointed to steep enrollment losses.

Overview

  • Closures and co-locations take effect at the end of the 2025–26 school year, with students reassigned to nearby campuses such as Fleming and McReynolds to Mickey Leland YMCPA, Cage to Lantrip, and Hobby grades 1–5 to Lawson with Pre-K/K to MLK Early Childhood Center.
  • District officials are launching transition supports, publishing updated 2026–27 attendance maps and placement plans, and scheduling a school-choice fair on April 11.
  • HISD says all certified teachers and contracted staff at affected schools will be placed within the district, with job placement notifications by April 17.
  • Transportation plans include standard eligibility-based busing and a temporary two-year shuttle from each closing campus to its receiving school for any interested student.
  • Parents and elected officials continue to question transparency and equity in the process, with one parent removed by police during the meeting and Superintendent Mike Miles declining a City Council invitation to discuss the plan.
