Houston Host Committee Takes Control of NRG Stadium and EaDo for World Cup Build-Out

The move starts FIFA’s final prep window at the venue under tight deadlines.

Overview

  • The host committee moved into NRG Stadium on Friday to begin final preparations and started building the multi-block FIFA Fan Festival in East Downtown.
  • Crews had already removed NRG signage in April, and pitch installation now begins as the venue is rebranded “Houston Stadium” for the tournament.
  • FIFA assumes exclusive use of the stadium on May 15, with seven matches scheduled from June 14 through a July 4 knockout game.
  • Houston METRO will boost rail frequency, add bus capacity and Park & Ride options, and keep fares at about $1.25 after more than $9 million in federal support.
  • Officials urge transit over driving, noting limited and costly stadium parking priced around $100 to $175 and a new Green Corridor linking key sites by rail, walking paths and bike trails.
