House Kills Al Green’s Trump Impeachment Resolution in 237–140 Vote

Democratic leaders voted present to signal that, without formal investigations, impeachment should not advance.

Overview

  • Republicans moved to table Rep. Al Green’s privileged impeachment measure, and the House voted 237–140 to set it aside, with 47 members voting present.
  • Twenty-three Democrats joined Republicans to table the resolution, while House Democratic leaders, including Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar, registered present.
  • Green’s articles accused President Trump of calling for the execution of six Democratic lawmakers and of threatening judicial independence, citing Trump’s post saying “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH,” which the White House later clarified was not a call for executions.
  • The privileged resolution forced rapid floor action but was procedurally defeated by a tabling motion; compared with June, more Democrats opposed tabling, with 140 now voting against it.
  • With Republicans controlling both chambers, any impeachment effort is unlikely to succeed in the Senate, and separate Democratic filings against HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth are viewed as largely symbolic for now.
